Ethnic Oddities: Sweet Potato Kit Kat?

Every now and then I come by an item in the ethnic grocery store that I just *have* to buy. Sometimes its the packaging. Other times its the different shape / peel / shell. Sometimes it is just plain odd.

The Kit Kat that I found above was one such item. I found it in the processed food store at Lansdowne center - the place imports lots of sauces, noodles, candies, beverages and other ingredients and prepared foods.

I'd seen the Kit Kat container before - but I guess I have passive sight or something - this was the first time I'd noticed the black sesame-covered sweet potato chunks on the front.

Hmmm...sweet potato Kit Kat? I thought to myself. I wondered what that would taste like for a moment, then plunked the toonie for the small package.

The packaging is primarily in Japanese, with the standard Kit Kat catchphrase, "Have a break, have a KitKat" on opposing ends of the box. The small stickered English portion says the product is Kitkat Daigakuimo Chocolate - essentially, candied sweet potato chocolate.

There were two snack sized portions inside the box, and they didn't taste too bad. I could detect too much sweet potato or black sesame like depicted on the box, but I think this is supposed to be marketed to those who want to enjoy KitKat, but only want to use up 114 calories in their diet.

The KitKat had white chocolate coating, which was too sweet for my liking, and a *slight* orange tinge to the wafers coated within. Not too bad, but I think I'll stick to my regular chocolate KitKat from now on. :)
